Delivering value and insight

The value of synthetic monitoring

Baseline & Benchmark Performance

Synthetic monitoring or ‘lab’ data is more reliable, accurate, and consistent than real user monitoring data for purposes of understanding the conditions that lead to user experience performance regression and degradation.

Maintain Performance Standards Over Time

Performance is not a one-and-done discipline and degrades over time. Operationalizing performance by integrating it into the development process is essential for keeping your sites and web apps fast and performant.

Prevent UX Issues
Before They Impact Users

While RUM can be useful to understand what your actual users are experiencing in production environments, the damage is done. Only synthetics enables you to apply performance testing to UAT, staging, QA and lower environments to effectively address performance issues before they impact users.

Synthetic Monitoring
Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key benefits of synthetic monitoring?

  1. Gain visibility into your users experience
  2. Keep a pulse on your mission critical user paths to ensure they are functioning as expected (like your product to checkout flow)
  3. Baseline your current performance & benchmark yourself against industry leaders (and competitors).
  4. Maintain performance standards over time
  5. Integrate it into pre-production testing to prevent UX issues before they impact your users and bottom line.

What is the difference between free tools and an enterprise-grade solution like Rigor?

Free tools such as WebPageTest and Google Lighthouse are great for one-off or manual performance testing, in a single point of time.

An enterprise-grade solution is necessary when you have the need to track, trend, and alert on performance over time.

In order to establish an effective performance strategy, you need to have a consistent real-time pulse on performance. Rigor’s automated process provides performance trends, more accurate data points and alerts when intermittent issues, let alone full-blown outages, are occurring.

Running a test once a week (or once in a while) is not a true representation of your site’s performance. Using a platform where all your different tests are automatically collecting and storing data for any and all of your teams will provide a more effective path to improving performance.

What's the Difference between Synthetic Monitoring & RUM?

Synthetics and Real User Monitoring (RUM) solutions do profoundly different things and are often highly valuable and complementary solutions.

The goal of each is insight into the user experience. The differences, however, are vast.

Synthetics captures “lab” data, RUM captures “field” data. Synthetics is a method designed to simulate the actions taken by an actual user, to inspect and analyze impact under certain conditions (geographic locations, device type, network speed, etc.). RUM is a method of capturing speed and performance data in your live production environments, and is essential for many organizations trying to understand how users are experiencing their websites.

The advantage of synthetics is that you can run tests in pre-production and lower environments (like staging, UAT & QA). This ability allows users to set performance thresholds, run performance tests during the software development process, and fix performance, content, and UX issues before they impact your real users on your product websites. Therefore, synthetic monitoring allows the prevention of UX issues from having a negative impact on your brand, conversion rates, and revenue.

While Rigor specializes in synthetics alone, we closely partner and integrate with Akamai mPulse, our preferred RUM solution provider.

I currently use Google Lighthouse. Can I get value out of Rigor?

Absolutely! There are many great features and insights that Google Lighthouse can provide, which is why Rigor’s Optimization engine also provides a “Google Lighthouse Score.” But when it comes to operationalizing performance across many teams, there are some key capabilities that become very manual and necessitate an enterprise-grade solution, like Rigor.

What's the Difference between Synthetic Monitoring & APM?

Application performance management (APM), generally refers to monitoring and gaining observability into into the availability and performance of your infrastructure – HTTP server, middleware, database, third-party API services, and more. This is commonly referred to as ‘back-end monitoring’.

Synthetics is a method of front-end user experience monitoring that provides an outside-in view of what your users actually experience when they visit your website. This experience can be largely impacted by a host of factors including, type and version of the browser used, device type, network connection, geographic location, third-party domains, and more. This is what Rigor specializes in, front-end performance or Digital Experience Management (DEM)…
