What's the Difference between Synthetic Monitoring & RUM?

Synthetics and Real User Monitoring (RUM) solutions do profoundly different things and are often highly valuable and complementary solutions.

The goal of each is insight into the user experience. The differences, however, are vast.

Synthetics captures “lab” data, RUM captures “field” data. Synthetics is a method designed to simulate the actions taken by an actual user, to inspect and analyze impact under certain conditions (geographic locations, device type, network speed, etc.). RUM is a method of capturing speed and performance data in your live production environments, and is essential for many organizations trying to understand how users are experiencing their websites.

The advantage of synthetics is that you can run tests in pre-production and lower environments (like staging, UAT & QA). This ability allows users to set performance thresholds, run performance tests during the software development process, and fix performance, content, and UX issues before they impact your real users on your product websites.
