We spoke with Shaun Smith, vice president of global technology operations at The Weather Company, about working with Rigor.
Why did you need synthetic monitoring?
As The Weather Company moved more and more of its services to the cloud, there became a need to monitor the performance and availability of our externally hosted applications. Monitoring these applications and services had proved difficult as we were scaling at such a rapid rate.
How did Rigor change things for you?
Rigor allows us to monitor the performance and availability of all of our global technology services in real time. It’s been fairly seamless: we turned it on and Rigor consistently monitors behind the scenes and alerts our team to service outages as they occur in real time. Rigor’s setup and administration turned out to be quite simple, which allowed our staff to come up to speed very quickly.

How does synthetic monitoring help your business?
With the prevalence of cloud infrastructure and services, there is a great need to monitor technology that was previously managed in-house. Synthetic monitoring affords us the luxury to monitor all of our technology and makes it very easy to spot and diagnose performance degradation as it occurs. Because of Rigor, we are able to baseline the experience of our end users and easily identify downtime before it impacts them.
As vice president of global technology operations for The Weather Company, Shaun Smith provides IT services across the organization, which includes The Weather Channel®, Weather Underground and WSI brands. Shaun is responsible for multiple teams such as quality assurance, internal systems, desktop support, reliability and systems engineering, information security, as well as the Technology Operations Center, which provides support for all IT issues.
