Using Rigor we reduced our average load time by 20%, which led to a 14% increase in average order value.
Why did you need synthetic monitoring?
Based on research released by the Aberdeen Group revealing a correlation between page load times and our key performance indicators including conversion rate and average page views per visit, we recognized the negative effects our slow site could be having on online sales. We knew that optimizing the business performance of Tempurpedic.com would require optimizing the technical performance of the site. However, although employees and customers had diagnosed the site to be slow, we could not pinpoint the cause of the sluggishness and thus could not begin to take the steps toward site optimization.
How did Rigor change things for you?
In order to decrease load times and boost online sales, we first needed to understand the root causes of the latency issues. This is where Rigor proved invaluable. Using Rigor’s Real Browser Checks and Uptime Checks 24×7, we were able to gain insight into the individual factors influencing the load times of Tempurpedic.com’s homepage, top product pages, and inquiry forms. Rigor also monitored our site’s checkout process, employing the various paths customers might take when purchasing a product, including financing through Wells Fargo and checking out with a credit a card. Additionally, Rigor we implemented Uptime Checks on relevant CDN’s from nine different locations in order to uncover any 3rd party factors that might have been contributing to Tempurpedic.com’s deficient load times.
Using the data gathered from these tests, Rigor pinpointed the internal and external factors responsible for the site’s latencies. Internal factors included items such as code, CSS, and queries, while external factors consisted of items such as servers, CDN, and 3rd party pixels. Using the insights gathered from Rigor’s reports and analytics, we chose to focus on optimizing the internal factors identified as problem areas and worked with ShopVisible to implement 12 key site optimizations.
What were the benefits of employing Rigor’s monitoring?
After Rigor identified the factors contributing to Tempurpedic.com’s slow load times, we were able to conduct optimization efforts that improved the site’s overall load time by 20%. This improvement yielded the following impressive KPI strides, amongst others: bounce rate decreased by 12%, conversions increased by 1%, time on site increased by 10%, average page views increased by 13%, and most significant to Tempur-Pedic’s bottom line, average order value increased by 14%.
These numbers proved to us that a faster site leads customers to visit a greater number of pages, which results in more product browsing and larger purchases. Tempur-Pedic generated 94 MM in online revenues for 2011. Thus, a 14% increase in average order value results in an estimated $13 MM increase in revenue for Tempurpedic.com–an incredible gain that would have been forgone without optimizing site speed. Rigor’s testing, monitoring, and detailed performance reports gave Tempur-Pedic the insight needed to create a targeted and efficient strategy for improving the performance of Tempur-Pedic.com. By satisfying our customer’s need for speed, we were able to fully leverage our newly launched site and realize extraordinary revenue growth.
